Members of the Student Leadership Association (SLA) at the Greenville campus turned out on a rainy Saturday at Fluor Field to walk. With each step, they raised funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and demonstrated what it means to be part of “Team ECPI” as they supported one of their own.
Richard Romanuk rallied fellow SLA members for a worthy cause that greatly impacts him. His wife, Dina, has been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Still recovering from major surgery, she was determined to be there for the event; her husband pushed her in a wheelchair when she was no longer able to walk.
“We heard about the walk at one of her doctor’s appointments,” said Romanuk. “Until that point, we didn’t realize the comprehensive nature of MDA. The funds we raise contribute to breakthrough research and care for kids and adults who have muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other neuromuscular diseases.”
Prior to the September walk, SLA members spent several weeks securing more than $1,000 in donations. Early-morning coffee and biscuit sales contributed to the overall effort. On the morning of the walk, student leaders began to appear with loved ones, including Dina Romanuk’s mom and dad. Rounding the bases of the Greenville Drive baseball team’s home field, ECPI University was honored with the Largest Team Award.
Faculty Advisor Zach Snow was the first to applaud their efforts. “This group of student leaders has truly shown what it means to be a team,” said Snow. “When Rick approached me about participating in the walk, the others felt his passion for the cause. I’m proud of everyone who’s taken time to do this, and I look forward to the next time we can come together to give back to the community.”
