Retired Sailor Continues to Serve
Otelo Rodriguez spent more than 20 years in the service of his country. Though retired from the Navy, he still felt a calling to public service. First, however, he would need additional education. Otelo enrolled at ECPI University’s Virginia Beach campus and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. It did not always come easy. He will be the first to say that earning his degree was not something he was sure he would even do. “The support I received from my instructors and advisors made all the difference,” he says. “The experience was so incredible that I enrolled again, this time as an online student, and graduated in 2020 with a second degree, a Bachelor’s in Homeland Security.”
“Working in a school, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors has been such a rewarding experience.”
– Otelo Rodriguez, Online Homeland Security Graduate
Otelo represents the kind of student ECPI University takes special pride in serving, someone who, at first, doubted his abilities, but with a little bit of encouragement and a lot of support, blossoms into an accomplished student and a professional in his chosen field. In fact, he’s now enrolled yet again, this time studying Crime and Intelligence Analysis.
Currently a Community School Officer in Florida for Hillsborough County Schools, Otelo says his degrees have not only expanded his knowledge, but he has also received annual education bonuses with his department. “Working in a school, ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors has been such a rewarding experience,” he says. “I am enjoying coming to work every day. Getting to know all the students and family members within the community makes me feel like I am not even working. I want to thank everyone at ECPI University for their time and dedication to us all.”
